Swimming pool pumps pump the water from the pool to the filter and back to the swimming pool. The higher the horsepower, the greater the water flow. When it comes to swimming pool pumps, bigger is not always better. Like many things today, new technology has improved the swimming pool pump. They offer better efficiency and design.

How do I know what size swimming pool pump I need?

When replacing an old fatigued swimming pool pump, keep in mind that the new styles have increased pressure and water flow. This may result in the need to downsize on your horsepower at replacement time.

If your swimming pool has 1 1/2 inch plumbing never install a pump greater than a 3/4 hp the exclusion from this rule would be if you had a "T" installed in the line betwwen the swimming pool pump and the swimming pool filter to operate a swimming pool cleaner .

If your plumbing in your swimming pool is 2 inch you can use a larger swimming pool pump. This usally is not required unless you have many return lines, along run of plumbing or a swimming pool or spa combination.
